Winters Crowned 2012 Stockton 99 Modified Champion, Presented by Star Racing Supply
STOCKTON, CA- Championship points were close for Scott Winters and Nik Romano as they headed into Saturday's events being separated by only eight points and Nick Lyons in third was just 20 points from Romano. With a big car count anyone in the top three could claim the Championship. The division was sure to bring on a great show as the leaders battled for the infamous championship title. The nights events were sure to bring on lots of excitement and put on a wild show for the fans.
Nineteen Modifieds participated in the final championship race of the year and points leader Scott Winters came prepared bringing his backup car. Winters topped the charts in qualifying with a fast time of 14.040 seconds around the quarter mile oval. Followed by Nick Lyons, Rich Lindgren, Jason Bamberg and John Mamula the fast five. Mamula stole the show in the four lap trophy dash with a 1.012 second victory.
In the first 40 lap main event an invert of four was drawn setting Bamberg and Lindgren on the front row to set the pace for the green flag. Bamberg with a good start jumped to the early lead over Lindgren. Yellow flag on lap three as Tripp Gaylord spun in turn one. The field crossed them up for the restart and after the field went green another caution was thrown. Both Mamula and Thompson were battling for fifth when the two collided on the back stretch. As the field went Green again Bamberg took the lead in turn one as Winters and Lyons race side by side. Winters claimed third for good on lap five and began to set his sights on the leaders. By lap seven, Winters moved into the second spot chasing down Bamberg.
Caution flag on lap seven as Lyons and Rich Field collide in turn three collecting Kyle Gottula and Eddie Wilcox. A single file restart was ordered for the division as Bamberg led the way to the restart. Keegan Walmer jumped to the inside of Fields for third on lap 12 and Walmer would take the spot by lap 14. As Bamberg continued to hold off Winters the racing action was for third as Walmer, Field, Romano, Clark and Lyons all bumped and grinded for positions. On lap 25, Lyons spun in turn one causing another yellow and the division would line up single file for the restart. In the closing laps, Bamberg held off Winters to collect his second victory at Stockton 99 Speedway. Followed by Scott Winters, Keegan Walmer, Andy Field and Nik Romano the final five.
An invert of eight was picked for the second and last 40 lap main event for the Whelen All American Modifieds setting Lindgren and AJ Ryder on the front row. Starting the second main event, Winters picked up a 14 point lead over Romano and the championship was down to the wire. Lindgren took the early lead and Ryder tucked in behind him followed by Romano, Fields and Winters. Romano and Field put on a good battle for third till lap five Wilcox spun in turn three. On the restart, Ryder passed Lindgren for the lead on the outside as Field moved by Romano for third and Winters attempted to follow thru for fourth.
On lap eight, Gottula spun on the front stretch and collected Wilcox as both drivers would continue on under the restart. On the restart, Ryder took the lead again as Romano and Winters battled side by side for fourth. Ryder got loose in turn one handing the lead over to Lindgren on lap 12 as Mamula spun in turn four bringing out another yellow. Single file restart for the field once again and Field jumped to the inside of Lindgren for the lead but couldn't complete the pass.
As the leaders battled, Romano and Winters continued to put on a show for the fourth position till Winters gained the position on lap 15. On lap 17, Field continued to try to complete his pass on Lindgren and took the lead on lap 18. Caution flag on lap 19, as Lindgren spun in turn one collecting Ryder and Romano.
As the field went green another yellow was thrown as Bamberg and Walmer collided on lap 22. Field restarted the field and continued to hold off Winters for the lead. Another yellow on lap 30 brought the field together making the last 10 laps of the championship full of action. Winters attempted to jump to the inside of Field but Field was able to edge him for the lead. Andy Field held off Winters by .485 seconds to collect his first 2012 Modified victory. Followed by Scott Winters, Nick Lyons, Cody Thompson and William Camara the final five.
Scott Winters won the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All American Modified Championship presented by Star Racing Supply making this the 2nd championship for 2012 collecting one at All American Speedway as well. Scott Winters is the first driver to ever collect a track championship at both Stockton 99 Speedway and All American Speedway as well as ranked #1 in the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All American Series in the state of California.
