Lyons Wins the Star Grand American Modified Championship at Stockton 99 Speedway
STOCKTON, CA- Championship points were wrapped up a few races ago as Nick Lyons topped the division and William Camara was safe in second. However, third place championship was up for grabs between David Stricklin and Jessica Clark. David Stricklin was a no show for the nights events, and with Jessica’s performances, it may not have mattered. Clark took third place in the championship. The Star Grand American Modifieds headed into Saturday's races for rounds 19 and 20 featuring twin 40 lap features. The Star Grand American Modifieds is a series within the NASCAR Whelen All American Modified series.
As the Star GAM drivers compete for their own points and payouts provided by Star Racing Supply, they will also be competing in the NASCAR Whelen All American modified series as well.
Points leader, Nick Lyons was the driver to beat in the division posting fast laps in both practice sessions and coming out on top for the number one qualifier for the group. Lyons posted a fast lap of 14.110, the quickest he has ran this year. Followed by William Camara second, Jessica Clark third and Todd Lewis fourth. Clark took home her first Trophy dash victory with a close finish holding off Lyons for the win.
Points leader, Nick Lyons started in the third position for the starting grid of the main event. Lyons fell back to fourth on the start and ran consistent through the yellows on lap 3 and 4. On lap seven, Lyons and Rich Field collided in turn three collecting Kyle Gottula and Eddie Wilcox. Lyons was able to continue on starting 11th on the restart. On lap nine, Nick caught up to Camera and the two put on a good battle for ninth till Nick passed him for good on lap 12. By lap 15, Nick passed Crouch for eighth and began to set his sights on Clark. On lap 24, Lyons put the pressure on Clark and couldn't complete his pass spinning on lap 25.
In the closing laps, Lyons had to work his way back through the field and landed a solid tenth place finish in the Whelen division and a second in the Star GAM series. Lyons started 10th for the second main event and progressed to 8th by lap six. As the race went on Nick moved into seventh on lap 13, sixth on lap 17 and third on lap 20. Lyons staying out of trouble was able to give the leaders some pressure and holding off any contenders. Lyons finished third in the Whelen division and grabbed another win in the Star GAM series.
William Camara started tenth in the first main event and saw some struggles in the opening laps falling hard to 14th but managed to work his way up to ninth by lap eight. On lap 15, Camara fell back to 14th again. Trying to work his way back through the field Camara ran out of laps and finished 12th in the Whelen division and a fourth in the Star GAM series. William started 12th in the second main event and jumped into the 11th position right away. On a restart on lap 12, Camara moved into the tenth position setting his sights on Lyons. After a couple of restarts and avoiding wrecks Camera had moved into the fifth position by lap 23. Camara ran with the lead pack for the remainder of the race and collected a second in the Star GAM series.
Rookie Female driver, Jessica Clark started 11th on the grid and progressed well through the first few yellows landing the sixth spot on lap eight. Clark ran consistent with the lead pack for the remainder of the race and finished sixth in the Whelen division. Clark collected her first ever Star GAM victory. Clark started third for the second main event and fell hard in the opening laps to 13th. By lap 13, Clark was in 12th. After a few series of cautions Clark wound up in eighth by lap 23. Clark got passed on the white flag lap and finished ninth in the Whelen series and a third in the Star GAM division.
Returning driver, Todd Lewis started 19th in the first 40 lap main event and progressed to 15th by lap nine. Lewis cruised in the 15th position for the rest of the race and grabbed a fifth in the Star GAM series. Lewis started 15th in the second main and ran consistent in 15th for the entire race. After a few cautions, Lewis had gained and lost some positions but ended in the 15th spot. Lewis took home a fifth in the Star GAM series.
